The gateway to clarity: why the closet comes first. There is a question I am asked at almost every consultation: can we please start with the kitchen, the office, the basement — anywhere but the bedroom closet? The answer is almost always no. KonMari™ begins with clothing for a specific reason. Clothing is the lowest-stakes category in the home. A sweater is not a love letter. A pair of trousers is not your mother’s wedding ring. The closet is therefore the practice room — the place where the hand learns to distinguish, with confidence, what stays from what has finished its work. By the time the practice graduates to books, papers, komono, and finally the sentimental category, the decision-making muscle is trained. The sentimental items, which would have been impossible on day one, become possible on day forty. The closet is not the goal. It is the gateway.
